EQL Summertour & Prizepool EQL4

2006-05-31 11:24 by zanne

For everyone who likes to stay active during the summer, we'll host EQL Summertour starting in late June and ending in mid August, a signup form will be here soon.

In other news, the winners of Division1 EQL4 will recieve some money, Im (zanne) currently dealing with some sponsors about a prize pot to the winners, this will only be for Division1 and the reason for that seems to me be quite obvious. I really hope that clans practice alot during the summer and EQL summertour and that this perhaps could light a new fire to the quake scene - More about this shortly.
Dont expect too much thought, we're looking at perhaps 4-500? for the winning clan, ofcourse it would be nice to have more, but hey this is a 10 year old game we're playing :)

Have a nice summer everyone and Im looking forward to see your clan in EQL Summertour!

"People can play football (both practice and matches) on scheduled times but not Quakeworld, that's a bit weird imo" No ?ke, that is not weird. You can not compare a sport like football with FPS-games when it comes to dicipline. In football you got federations and associations, which teams (clans) are commited to. What are FPS-clans commited to? Nothing. You know that :)

How about making some kind of donation-thing. If it would be easily seen who has donated what and how much it would be easy to control that the money has gone to the right place etc. "list of donating players" in other words and the amount of money. Well atleast I would be ready to donate something for the winners. Not much but if there would many donators the money could be split somehow to the top3 clans or something.

"they havn't changed the graphics of soccer in 100 years, why should they in a computer game?"

Not trying to take anything from you or even remotely get involved in the seriousity of the topic at hand, but I'm amazed no one has mentioned even a word on the quote above yet. :D

#55 2006-06-04 10:44 by Hooraytio (212.214.218.XXX)

will ppl ever stop comparing quakeworld to soccer?

its like comparing fish with the moon or any other equally good comparison...

For what it's worth most of the major leagues in the UK always used to run to a fairly fixed schedule. The schedule would be laid out at the start of the season, say on a sunday afternoon or whatever with games spread over 3 passworded servers with admins assigned for each game.

Now of course fixing the server isn't possible in a european league, but I think we could maybe look at some kind of stricter scheduling. What I would suggest is that you can fix games for a certain day/time, but with the flexibility to change provided that the admins are contacted early enough (a few days before at least). Also teams should get maybe one or two 'timeouts' where they can postpone a game in the case of some emergency like a couple of players lose internet connection, have other committments or whatever.

The flaw with this kind of scheduling arrangement is that some players have limitations on what days they can play (e.g. player X can't play Wednesday because he has football practice). So to keep things fair there would have to be some kind of rotation i.e. over the course of the season you don't play on the same day of the week every time.

As regards money the big problem is of course that it is likely to reduce sportsmanship and of course encourage cheating. On a LAN this is something which can be moderated to some extent, but online? We certainly need some kind of delayed QTV first to eliminate the prospect of ghosting now that many clans are using voice.

"The flaw with this kind of scheduling arrangement is that some players have limitations on what days they can play (e.g. player X can't play Wednesday because he has football practice). " ... another good argument to get ppl to pay to play, its the only way to get ppl to get priorties stright. Even a div. 6 player in football meets up to play at scheduled times, but not the best qw players.

After seeing the div1 playoffs (2 of 3 games ended with wo) i think prizepool can only do good.It can motivate players to play the games maybe B)

lol link, pay to play qw, hahaha

The whine will still be there, the money will be a nice bonus
If people become greedy because there's more than the title of division 1 winner they need to see why they play qw in the first place.
The problem is first of all the inactivity, removed clans, unplayed games etc
if we can make all games happen, then we have a condition that people will keep playing. The newcomers need help, and most of those come to client-chans on irc. I've seen many asking for help in the #fuhquake-channel that sadly is more dead than Shub-Niggurath
get people started, make them play someone equal in skill-level, get them involved in tdm. those who actually make it into tdm will either quit after/during one season or keep playing because they had someone in the clan that "styrde upp" every game
what I'm saying is, fix the newcomers cfgs, fix their teamplay and keep experienced players out of division 5!
money won't be a problem until some greedy ass will go whine on ping-conditions til dawn

final game would be played if idle clans like la got kicked way earlier.
it's better to see a final game between teoreticaly weaker clans rather then not to see a final at all.

#62 2006-06-05 12:17 by Hooraytio (212.214.218.XXX)

well, check challenge smackdown where only half of all finals have actually been played, gg?

ppl will start to lose interest in div1 if they continue to piss on the rest of the community by not playing groupgames div0 vs div0 and only play the "weaker" div1 clans, and then just idle in the playoffs because they dont dare to lose or play with 5ms ping disadvantage

i think the overall activity in the rest of the groups have been good and we should focus on keeping that up instead, leaving div1 with their pubic problems...

#63 2006-06-05 13:59 by HighlandeR (150.254.194.XXX)

more strict scheduleing and kicking idlers should filter out really active clans easly.
that would also require to make season shorter so that the league doesnt end with 20% of teams that acutally singed up :D

imo it's better see clans like osams, zoo or ssc playing in div1 (as replacment for div0 idlers) rather then qw legends like LA or TVS idling.
perhaps this would force those clans to either play all their games or make a clear statement 'we're done with qw' or at least 'we're done with competitive play'.

make divs larger as 20-30% of clans wont make it to the end and problem is solved.
if a clan cant find a time to play like 1 game a weak - noone is forceing them to play just dont sign up.

#64 2006-06-05 14:18 by -insane- (83.27.152.XXX)

Yea i think merging div1 + upper half of div2 is a good idea also B<

#65 2006-06-05 14:41 by Link (84.209.104.XXX)

To Gay; in every sport you pay if you want to play in an organised league. You dont have to pay to play the sport, but if you want it orginised, you must pay for it. If ppl want QW to be like a sport - where 99,99% of alle scheduled games - are played, then you need to look at how they do it. Or keep debating :>

#66 2006-06-05 15:52 by HighlandeR (150.254.194.XXX)

i'd be caution with "pay per play" system.
i cant imaging div5 - casual gamers pay to play in a league.

this could work for div1 and only if there was a good benefit from that money.

"more strict scheduleing and kicking idlers should filter out really active clans easly.

Seasons are already short enough imo. I think that one strictly scheduled game/week should be possible for all clans who sign up for the league. I realize some clans would say this sucks as they can't play when they want then (Hello SD!) - but don't you agree that buffering up all your games until the last week sucks ass? It kind of ruins that "feeling" a league should have. The division table should be representative for the clan's current shape - if a clan have zero points in week 5 it shouldn't be because they haven't played any games yet.

My thoughts about the pay-to-play view is that it's an interesting idea. I don't think it is possible to go through with such a thing in a QW 4on4 tournament though unless there was a reward in all different divisions. But having a prize purse in all different divisions only creates more problem than it's worth so that idea sucks ass too.

#68 2006-06-05 16:52 by HighlandeR (150.254.194.XXX)

prize-pool can be set only for div1 unless you want to see div1 players fakenicking in div5 games.

>but don't you agree that buffering up all your games until the last week sucks ass?

agree - but it's just difficult to handle - not much enough servers plus random connection problems.

10 clans/ 5 divs = 25 games/week -> most got played during the weekend so it's 25 games/3 days = 8 games a day* 1-2h/game

might be a problem to find suiteable servers for 8 games.

ps.
with fixed schedules it could be a good idea to let each clan play twice each opponent to reduce random factors like connection problems causing weaker lineups or even WO's.

Stats on when the games where reported this season. Assuming that most games where reported quite soon after the game was played, one can use this to get some knowledge on how popular the QW days are.

Monday: 30
Tuesday: 26
Wednesday: 22
Thursday: 26
Friday: 6
Satursday: 14
Sunday: 51

These stats are not 100% accurate, i know, but imo they say that sundays are by far most popular. Fridays and saturdays people spend time on other stuff (partying or whatever, only the real QW zealots play then) and the casual games takes place on sunday - thursday with a peak on sunday.

What do i want to say with this? You can't count with 25 games/weekend. :)
