It was time for the World QuakeWorld League to land in South America. The division
tooks place only in Brazil because our territory is so big that it's almost
bigger than all other latin countries together. A Brazilian division could easily exist next to a South American division. Different from all other QuakeWorld scenes
worldwide, here the whole country is focused in less than a dozen servers across
our biggest city, Sao Paulo.
Some people for sure wouldn't have the same speed connect as others but this
made our Quake with no frontiers, literally. From this and more facts than I can
remember our scene raised a healthy rage over the players' minds, building
happenings and histories creating what I believe to be a unique folklore inside
our remaining community. Quake started in Brazil already in 1996, but only
took the country by storm little before the middle of 1997. Surprisingly at that
point we already had heroes and dynasties inside the Quake.
The joy and the gratification of being united with the current
and valuable epic of Challenge Smackdown didn't reflect in the arenas and battlefields of Brazil. Our division
group-games resulted in a big spectacle of walkovers, about 85% of games ended
this way. Historically QuakeWorld in our country always faced problems in
the first half of past years, since 1997, and more specifically in the leagues
and tourneys segment. Through that I did the impossible to postpone the beginning
of the league insofar as possible without injuring the other general resources
of the world league. In this time plenty pressure came from teams and players to
start games, since it was coming from newcomers I knew it was "trashtalk"
because they would prove to be exactly the transgressors of the league.
I can't deny my frustration watching this after working to get things at least
a little more favorable to everybody. But I can't deny Challenge Smackdown entered
our scene in a bad time either, I prefer to believe it was bad luck than anything else.
Twelve teams set the brazilian division, Rage Clan then 8th Command of Brazil,
Quakers in Black, Clanalhas, Hell Raiser then Black Hawks in group 1, RS
Terminators, ClanBrazil, Papa-figo and Blood Revenge in group 2, Lords of War,
Animaniacs, Full Connect and Grave Diggers in group 3. Almost all games played
were done inside group 3 because it is the group where you have a bigger
number of experienced teams than the others. I could have a complete season
without walkovers but then I would count with a minimum number of teams, and
this was not the idea, but now looking at the result, it's time to think again and
think with reason and not with the heart.
The objective now must be develop the playoffs (read here) and wait for great games and
then start all over again. After all, one day is for hunting, another is for
fishing.
