Challenge Smackdown Australia
 Round 1 - Wart
DM6 - The Dark Zone (Try Hard DM's choice)

ReportOptus was the venue for dm6 with both teams (consisting of 3 players each due to Rb not having a 4th) having pretty similar average pings. These first impressions weren't entirely accurate though as Driz and Neva experienced lag spurts throughout the map. Now to describe the game itself - THDM established an early lead and held onto it for around 5 minutes as both teams fought to keep RA for themselves. Rb slowly overtook THDM and then it was their turn to stay between 20 and 30 frags ahead for a while. It looked as if Rb would use their 20 frag buffer to coast to victory but with 5 minutes to go THDM drew level again. Rb weathered the storm and finished the map off in style, winning by over 30 frags.

Round 2 - Wart
DM2 - Claustrophobolis (Reborn's choice)

ReportDue to the problems Neva and Driz were having during dm6, the players moved over to IPGN where THDM had noticeably better pings...there was also a quick rule clarification about dm2 being played with dmm1 rules despite it being a 3 on 3 game. THDM got a dream start as Neva grabbed upper RL and quad which allowed the others to get armed as well. After 3 minutes THDM were ahead 31 - 1 and were doing a good job in stopping their opponents from getting many RLs which they could use to mount a comeback. This trend continued for a little while but you can't hold down a team like Rb forever...Tim was able to start sneaking a few quads out and the game became much more even, though THDM still had their comfortable lead. Ahead by almost 60 frags with 4 minutes remaining, THDM went into defensive mode by gathering in the big room and this helped slow down Rb's charge for a minute or so. In the end THDM's great start got them over the line.

Round 3 - Wart
E1M2 - Castle of the Damned (random map)

ReportDuring the dm2 game half of me was hoping that THDM would win so that an exciting third map could be played, while the other half wanted Rb to win otherwise there might be an extended discussion regarding the server to be used for the tiebreaker. Fearing the worst, I was relieved when THDM agreed to play on Optus almost straight away. The random map was e1m2, but as I was in the process of using the script to find this out both teams agreed to play e1m2 anyway...another relief. Rb were able to start the map slightly better than THDM who have done well on e1m2 all season. That was apparent even though Rb were ahead...THDM didn't let them get a significant run of frags going as YA and quad fell under the control of both team at various stages. Unlike dm6 there was no comeback by THDM as Rb gradually built on their lead right to the end and look good to be one of the Grand Finalists.
